IMAGE OF THE MONTH
The Atlantic sailfish are, to me, the most photogenic of any fish in the ocean. I captured this one, along with several others in this catalog, in one of my favorite places on the planet, Isles Mujeres. It lies about 13 clicks off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. Each spring the Spanish sardines make their way to these waters and the sailfish follow to feast. They are the only subspecies of billfish that feed communally, so when I dropped in, I found myself in the midst of a feeding frenzy of hundreds. I call this CLOSE CALL but, the sailfish are not aggressive and I never felt in danger. As a freediving photographer, being versatile and free of scuba gear allowed me to get up close and react quickly to capture some of my favorite images of my career.
